I love this quote. Too often we get tripped up by things we think are standing in our way. Things that come between us and our goals. It is very rare, though, that any of us will find a path completely clear of obstacles, a straight and even path from here to there. There will be obstacles. Things will come up. It might be hard to figure out. You might have to finagle things to make it work. You might have to alter your course.
But those things that are hard? They’re part of it. Part of your path, your journey. And they’ll make getting to the end more worthwhile.
Think about what you want and set a clear goal. Then move forward.
Things will happen. Don’t let them stop you…
You’ll oversleep, your kids will wake you up in the middle of the night, someone will throw up on the rug, you’ll pull a muscle, a neighbor will ask a favor, you’ll get in a fight with your husband, the kids will have a day off from school and you’ll be all thrown out of your routine, you’ll get a splitting headache, you’ll get sick, you’ll get a speeding ticket, someone will say something rude, you’ll be late for work, you’ll make mistakes, you’ll doubt yourself, the shower will leak and your kitchen ceiling will cave in, your washing machine and hot water heater will go in the same week, your child will develop a new fear, your friend will get some bad news, there will be holidays, there will be parties when you’re trying to be “good,” your car will break down, something really sad will happen.
But all of this is part of your path. Some of the obstacles will be small and some will be large and looming and not so easy to navigate. So don’t let the little bumps stand in your way. And when the big ones come up do your best to keep on going.
Know that life is not a smooth path and your smaller paths along the way won’t be either. Whether it’s losing weight or quitting smoking or sleep training your child there will be obstacles. Just don’t let them cause you to throw in the towel on that goal. They are part of your path on the way to reaching that goal.
