I am a big fan of shopping at BJ’s. I used to be a Costco person, but the shopping experience at the BJ’s near me is so much better than shopping at Costco. It’s less crowded, it’s brighter, it’s cleaner. While I still miss some things from Costco, I have found my favorites buys at BJs.
My trips to BJ’s vary. When I had more time during the school day I could make weekly trips and do the bulk of my food shopping there. Now I get there probably once a month. So I buy less produce, but stock up on the staples that I only buy there.
Here are my favorites:
- Kerrygold Butter. The good price and the big size of this item are one of the first things that made me fall in love with BJ’s. I get a few tubs at a time. Kerrygold butter is healthier than other butter because it’s from grass-fed cows. It’s “cleaner” than conventional butter. If you haven’t tried it yet you might be surprised at how different it looks- more yellow. It also tastes better!
- Coconut oil spray. I love this stuff. It sprays nicely and is a healthy oil to cook with. The spray ensures I don’t go overboard with the oil.
- Avocado oil. We use this primarily for salad dressing. I combine the oil, some lemon juice, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning in a little carafe and shake. It’s healthy, delicious, and you know exactly what’s in it!
- Guacamole. BJ’s has the little cups of Wholly Guacamole, which are the perfect portion size and have an awesome ingredient list. Avocados, garlic, salt! These are great with pepper strips. My daughter loves them with pretzels.
- Cinnamon. I use a lot of cinnamon- in my shakes, in my yogurt, on top of my frothy coconut oil coffee, in baking. So I love getting the big containers they have there.
- Salmon. Wild caught salmon is healthier than farm raised. Fresh salmon is expensive. So I go with the bag of frozen fillets at BJ’s. Salmon is so healthy we try to have it once a week.
- Coffee. I can count the number of times I’ve been to a Starbucks on one hand. I’m not a big fan of the Starbucks experience. However, I do like the taste of their coffee. So I buy it at BJ’s, usually with a coupon! Since we rarely used K-cups when we had a Keurig I felt I could justify splurging for a little pricier coffee to put in our reusable pods. (Now we use a French press and I’m loving it!)
- Organic sugar. I don’t buy organic everything and I’m not sure that I would have started buying organic sugar if it wasn’t for kombucha (you need to use organic sugar to make it). Now that I’ve been using it I don’t think I can go back. This is obviously not a health food, but it is a healthier option. Organic sugar is less processed.
- Maple syrup. BJ’s has the best price on maple syrup that I have ever seen! It was $10.99 when I went yesterday! We only use maple syrup, and we use it every week, and there are six of us. So we need a big ass bottle of maple syrup. It pains me to buy it anywhere else.
- Produce. You can get great buys on big containers of berries and they usually have the big bags of cauliflower and broccoli florets I love.
Other things I like to buy at BJ’s, but usually get at my local grocery store: milk, eggs, sticks of organic butter (the Wellesley Farms brand), cheese. They also have great bags of organic frozen fruit. You can find many great baking items there, too, that might be hard to find elsewhere. Coconut flour and coconut sugar! If you are a fan of Applegate Farm cold cuts BJ’s has great prices for those!
Non-food items I buy at BJ’s: garbage bags, tissues, paper towels, shampoo, and conditioner. They have good prices on Allegra and Vick’s VapoRub, too.
Do you shop at BJ’s? What are your favorite items?
Have a great day 🙂
Mary
