One of my favorite things in the whole wide world is reading. I also think it serves so many purposes and that it can be totally life-changing. Which brings me to my next tip to help you (and me) get out of that rut: Read a good book. And don’t be a self-help snob.
Call them self-help, call them personal development, call them personal growth. Call them whatever you want- they can make you and your life better. Reading them does not mean you are broken or depressed or weak or a weirdo. If you feel weird about it at first, you’ll get over it. Or maybe you’ll hide the book inside another book jacket, or only read it in the privacy of your own closet.
If you wanted to lose weight would it be so crazy to read a nutrition book? Or if you wanted to travel to Europe would it be crazy to buy a European travel guide book? (Well, these days you might not need an actual book. But you know what I’m saying.) So if you want to make a change or feel better or learn something or feel more connected is it so crazy to read a personal growth book?
If you’re not much of a reader, it only takes a few minutes a day to feel the difference. Or you can listen to an audiobook. Podcasts are great, too, but I would stick with a book for this.
There are so many good personal growth books out there right now; I feel like I can’t keep up with all the ones I want to read. See this post for some of my favorites.
Rachel Hollis has some great books to start with. And they don’t feel self-helpy. Brené Brown has some too, but hers definitely feel more introspective. If you read and liked Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, she has a great book Big Magic that is pretty motivating.
And if you’re still rolling your eyes or saying, “Ew,” you might not want to start with The Power of Vulnerability (by Brené Brown). Maybe try Unfu*k Yourself first (by Gary John Bishop).
If you’re not quite ready to venture to that section of Barnes & Noble, try an inspiring memoir.
Just like drinking water or exercising, reading positive stuff is a habit that can improve your life. Even if you are totally happy! And it’s easier than exercising 🙂
So, one tip to get out of that rut is simply to read a good book!
